Norwell is an affluent town located 20 miles south of Boston, with a population of over 11,000 residents. In 1982, the Norwell Village Area Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district is centered on the town common, which was first laid out in the 1640s. There are 34 buildings in the district, mostly residential, representing a variety of architectural styles from the 18th to early 20th centuries. Also included in the district are the 1830 First Parish Church, the 1874 Italianate-style James Library building, and the 1934 Colonial Revival Cushing Memorial Town Hall.
